The Afghanistan Tribute Knife

A sealed bid auction in aid of Help for Heroes Charity All bids to be received by 31.9.2010

Here is a unique opportunity to own a knife by maker
Ian R Bailey and to raise funds for the charity Help for Heroes.

I R Bailey is a part-time knife maker from Norfolk, an electrician by trade, who makes knives in the Loveless tradition. Ian’s knives are highly sought after due to his outstanding craftsmanship and the limited numbers produced.

Early in 2010 Ian was approached by a serving SNCO from the Light Dragoons on his return from Afghanistan with some design ideas and from there this project was formed.

The knife is based on a Loveless Chute knife and is presented in a handcrafted oak case with a velvet lining and dedication plaque made by joiner Ian Barrett using handtools only.

The handle material is a one-off resin laminate material made from the Dessert Pattern DPM worn by the serviceman on Operation Herrick in Helmand Province 2009. This is fitted to a mirror polished 1095 steel blade with a tapered tang and red fibre liners.

Included is a certificate of provenance with the names of all involved (although the serviceman wished to remain anonymous in any promotion of the auction). The following is a quote from him:

“My heart goes out to all the families and friends who have been affected by war all over the world. I lost 6 soldiers from my unit and many more from other units in the battle group.

This knife and case is a fine work of craftsmanship and all together makes a hell of a collection piece plus all the monies are going to a good cause”
